Email Marketing Roundtable Reveals Top Industry Trends

Email marketing leaders from ESPN, Publisher's Clearing House, Southwest Airlines, and other leading brands discuss data integration, social media and other industry priorities at StrongMail-sponsored event

Redwood City, Calif., June 7, 2010 – Email marketers see data integration, deliverability and social media as top priorities in 2010, according to a recent DMNews Industry Roundtable on the State of Email Marketing that was sponsored by email and social media marketing solutions provider StrongMail.

Conducted at DMNews' New York office on March 30, the roundtable featured email marketing executives from such notable brands as ESPN, Publisher's Clearing House, Southwest Airlines, TV Guide Online and Ziff Davis. DMNews editor-in-chief Carol Kroll and associate editor Dianna Dilworth moderated the discussion, which included expert commentary from StrongMail's senior director of strategic services, Kara Trivunovic.

Data integration was a central theme throughout the roundtable discussion, as the participants discussed their efforts to improve relevancy via a single view of the customer. Scott Keating, senior director of CRM marketing at ESPN explained how they are bringing together their various data sources, including Omniture source data, and integrating it all together against a single user.

Email marketers are still struggling with deliverability, which is complicated by changing protocols, insufficient reporting, and limited resources and expertise to deal with the challenges. Peter Westerman, senior vice president of audience marketing at Ziff Davis, discussed the importance of managing deliverability, even though it can be a time-consuming process.

Integrated marketing was also a top topic, as participants discussed integrating their email marketing programs with social media, mobile, direct mail, and other channels. Jason Scoggins, online marketing manager at Southwest Airlines, talked about the value of its social media outreach to have "true voices."
