STRONGMAIL SYSTEMS APPLAUDS DMA DECISION TO REQUIRE EMAIL AUTHENTICATION
REDWOOD SHORES, CA - October 25, 2005 - As a strong proponent of accountability in email, StrongMail Systems applauds the Direct Marketing Association (DMA) for taking an affirmative stance on requiring companies to adopt email authentication as a prerequisite for membership. StrongMail believes this is an important milestone in achieving industry adoption of authentication - the critical first step in restoring consumer trust in email, protecting the brands and reputations of legitimate marketers and ensuring that legitimate messages are delivered.
For several years now, StrongMail has been actively engaged in the efforts of the Messaging Anti-Abuse Working Group (MAAWG), the Anti-Phishing Working Group (APWG) and other groups to define industry standards and curb abusive or fraudulent email practices. The company is also a member of the steering committee for the Email Service Provider Coalition (ESPC). StrongMail vice president, Dave Lewis, co-chairs the ESPC committee that evaluates reputation services and was an author of the position statement on authentication that urged assertive action such as that taken by the DMA. (To view the statement, see http://www.espcoalition.org/eaps.php).
According to Lewis, "All of us in the email marketing community should welcome and support the DMA's announcement. Nonetheless, it's important for DMA member companies to recognize that there is no single email authentication protocol accepted by all ISPs. Therefore, companies should seek solutions that support multiple authentication methods to ensure the continued acceptance of their email."
Unlike many other solutions, the StrongMail platform supports all authentication methods, including the latest - DomainKeys Identified Mail (DKIM). In fact, companies can add StrongMail to their existing systems and be authenticating email in 30 minutes.
"Authentication is the first step in achieving sender accountability and protecting consumers from spam, phishing and other forms of fraudulent email that pollute the channel today," said Sam Cece, CEO of StrongMail Systems. "To realize the full potential of email, marketers will also need to adopt reputation ratings, smart bounce management, dynamic content for relevant messaging, and intelligent, differentiated sending practices - all of which require more powerful, technologically advanced sending platforms designed for tight integration and optimized for email delivery."
